We endeavour to promote the teaching of all physical education skills through other parts of the curriculum when possible, utilising the creative curriculum days we have weekly in school.
Through differentiation and channelling other ways for children to be involved in PE, such as reporter/photographer for key matches and competitions, all children, regardless of their sporting ability, can be involved in physical education, one way or another.
Implementation
Both the teachers and the PE Lead teach an equal amount of sessions within a half term. Every half term, a class will focus on developing skills within two sports. This way the PE lead, has an overview of all sports being taught, and making sure that progression is developing, as it should.
Starting at EYFS, we begin the journey of ensuring that all children develop the basic skills needed to build on, to enable them to develop a love of sport and a confidence to take part.
PE is also encouraged at both playtimes and lunchtimes, with a variety of equipment provided for the children to use and enjoy. Structured PE activities are also available for the children to participate in, within their free time.
Through the Islington PESSPA package, we actively take part in a number of competitions throughout the school year. These allow our Key Stage 2 children to experience sport as a team, the emotional aspects of sport and the many attributes needed to be a good all round sports person, such as; determination, resilience.
Multiple after school and breakfast clubs are available for children to attend, in which sports such as Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Netball, Dodgeball, Tennis and Multi sports are on offer.
Impact
Children will leave St John’s feeling happy and confident in sport, with a positive attitude in which they can take with them into the future. We hope to educate the children in order for them to understand that sport can have a positive effect on both the body and mind. The skills they have learnt and developed through the PE journey at St John’s will open up a number of opportunities, in which they may not have been able to access without them.
