At St John’s Highbury Vale Primary School we intend to build a Design Technology curriculum which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Children will know more, remember more and understand more.
At St John’s, our curriculum is designed and tailored to equip our children with the skills they need to develop into independent and inquisitive learners. At St John’s Highbury Vale Primary School we are committed to delivering an exciting and stimulating curriculum encompassing where explicit links are made between History and Geography. We believe that the History and Geography curriculum should inspire a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people. Our curriculum helps to develop our children’s critical thinking and allows their ability to question and evaluate analytically flourish.
At St John’s we want to introduce children to a modern foreign language at the beginning of Key Stage 2, so that by the end of Year 6 we can ensure that all children can speak and understand simple phrases, and ultimately so that they can navigate themselves around a different country. We want to encourage transferable skills, which lay the foundations for continuing their learning at secondary school, in either the same language or another.
At St John's we believe maths is an integral part of daily life; therefore our curriculum is designed to equip children with the necessary skills which they can use on a daily basis to confidently reason and solve problems.
At St John’s Highbury Vale CE Primary School, children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of historical periods, styles, traditions, and musical genres.
We follow Read Write Inc Phonics at St John's Highbury Vale. This scheme develops our children to read accurately and fluently with good comprehension and teaches them to form each letter correctly and segment words for spelling. Our children learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words; they then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.
Through the Get Set 4 PE teaching programme, we ensure that children learn a progressions of skills within a range of different sports. As well as the physical aspect of PE being taught, the children will also gain knowledge around health and fitness, and will be encouraged to evaluate and develop their performance.
At St John’s Highbury Vale, through the support of the LDBS syllabus, we aim for all of our children to become religiously literate. All units of learning are rooted in theological concepts, strong subject knowledge and content. The curriculum is balanced, covering all major world religions, and it allows the children to enquire into worldviews through theology, philosophy and the human and social sciences.
At St John’s Highbury Vale, we encourage children to be curious. To develop this curiosity, we believe that it is important for children to have hands-on scientific opportunities across their school career.
