At St John’s we believe maths is an integral part of daily life; therefore our curriculum is designed to equip children with the necessary skills which they can use on a daily basis to confidently reason and solve problems.
At St John’s we believe maths is an integral part of daily life; therefore our curriculum is designed to equip children with the necessary skills which they can use on a daily basis to confidently reason and solve problems.
Our maths curriculum gives children the opportunity to become fluent in the fundamentals of maths which they practise frequently so they can recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately. We introduce new mathematical concepts though a ‘concrete, pictorial and abstract’ approach, this enables children to have a hands on experience and have clear models and images to develop their learning. Implementation
We use a variety of planning resources which provides a bespoke teaching and learning experience for all our learners, designed to interest and inspire our learners. Lessons at St John’s are differentiated to meet the needs of all learners and teachers use our progression of skills guide to ensure knowledge and understanding is built upon from the Early Years through to year 6. Manipulatives are used in lessons to support the children’s understanding of concepts clearly. Fluency of multiplication and division facts is practised through the weekly multiplication challenge this supports the children to apply this knowledge rapidly and accurately when solving problems and reasoning. Feedback is given to the children in line with our marking policy and they are given time to respond to the feedback which supports them to develop their understanding further. Progress is tracked using our tracking system and interventions are put in place where we may see gaps
ImpactÂ
As a result of maths teaching at St John’s you will see children who are engaged and challenged, children who are able to talk about their maths learning enthusiastically and children who are able apply their maths knowledge independently in a range of increasingly complex problems and contexts. Learners will show a high level of pride in their understanding and presentation of their work and they will leave us feeling confident to apply the skills they have learnt at St John’s in the outside world.
